Woman's World

Roadside angel

When Woman’s World reader Lisa Gullusci ran out of gas on a busy stretch of highway, God sent an Earth angel to rescue her. She writes:

For years, I have always carried a Bible with me so I can read it when I need inspiration. One evening, I ran out of gas on the highway on my way to the restaurant where I worked.

These were the days before cellphones, and the only thing to do was to wait until the highway patrol happened by. I decided to read my Bible while I waited.

I was stranded at the bottom of a hill. Cars whizzed by, but no one stopped. Several times, I thought to get out of my car and go look for a gas station, but a feeling compelled me to wait, until, suddenly, I just felt the time was right. As I got to the top of the hill, a pickup truck stopped.

Because I felt I had been guided to that spot, I felt safe getting into the truck. It was dark, and all I could see of the man was his shadowed profile. He not only drove me to the gas station, but then drove me the 20 miles back to my car.

As we drove, we chatted. “I don’t know why, but this always happens to me,” he said. He then told me how, a month before, he had rescued a couple from a submerged car.

“Are you an angel?” I asked. For the first time, he looked at me, and in that moment,

“I felt guided to that spot, so I felt safe getting into the truck”

the lights from another car illuminated his face.

He was young with messy brown curly hair and wearing working man’s clothing. There was something startling in his eyes. I told him that I had prayed and maybe God had sent him to help me.

Grateful for his kindness, I offered him a meal at the restaurant where I worked. He turned it down because he too was going to be late for work. I asked where he worked, and when I got to my job, I called the place to offer to deliver a meal to him. I was told no such man worked there.

In my heart, I know that while he may not have had wings, God made an angel out of that man that day.
