Mortise Holes. Lay out the hole locations on the face of your mortised workpiece, making sure that they aren’t positioned too close to the edges of the tenon (detail ‘a’).

Then drill through both walls of the mortise. A backer board underneath the workpiece will help prevent tearout where the drill bit exits the workpiece.

Transfer Hole Locations. To transfer the hole locations, clamp the joint up and use a drill bit to mark the hole center locations on the tenon.

Create Offset. Using the transferred hole locations as your starting point, lay out the offset holes on the tenon. The holes in the tenon should be offset 1⁄16" to 1⁄8" from the holes in the mortise.
