Woonsocket to go red for women
WOONSOCKET — On Friday, the City of Woonsocket will recognize National Wear Red Day, a program of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women movement, to raise awareness for heart disease in women during American Heart Month.
City Hall employees will be making donations to the American Heart Association, wearing red and receiving a Go Red for Women pin and bracelet for their participation.
Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt said in a statement: “It’s an important reminder for women that although we lead very busy lives caring for others, that we remind ourselves to eat right, exercise, and get yearly checkups while recognizing the early signs of heart disease that shouldn’t be ignored.”
Heart disease is the number one cause of death among women, killing one in three.
This year is the 13th anniversary of National Wear Red Day, developed to combat misconceptions about heart disease.
Funds raised by Go Red for Women support both research and education outreach on risk for heart disease.
