Mass. collects $2.6 billion in January

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts collected nearly $2.6 billion in tax revenues in January.

That’s $78 million above an original monthly estimate made last year and $48 million more than a revised monthly estimate announced last month.

It’s also about $110 million, or 4.4 percent, more than the state took in last January.

Revenue Commissioner Mark Nunnelly says a significant portion of January’s revenues could be due to temporary or timing-related factors, which may not recur in coming months. He says the state must continue to monitor revenues closely.

Last month the state announced it was increasing its estimated revenue collections for the 2016 fiscal year that ends June 30. The new estimate is $25.7 billion, up from the earlier estimate of $25.6 billion.
