Paw­tucket co-op clinches spot in Divi­sion III play­offs

PAW­TUCKET – Thanks to gritty play through­out its Divi­sion III sea­son fi­nale, the Paw­tucket Co-op squad earned a thrilling 5-2 vic­tory over Woonsocket at Slater Park’s Mike Kenny Courts – and sealed a berth in the up­com­ing state team tour­na­ment.

Fresh­man Jeremy Clark and ju­nior Or­lando Cor­reira nailed down easy straight-set tri­umphs at Nos. 1 and 4 sin­gles, while Dao Thoun­sa­vath mus­tered a mighty tough 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (2) de­ci­sion over Xavier Den­nis at No. 3.

(WHS rep­re­sen­ta­tive Andy Rat­sapho cinched an ele­men­tary 6-1, 6-1 ver­dict over Matt Silva at the sec­ond spot).

The Tigers/Raiders also claimed two of the three dou­bles matches, with the top tan­dem of ju­niors Josiah Mor­ris and Larry Calmba battling to a 6-2, 6-4 vic­tory over Symin Sa­vat­phong and An­thony Phrasa­vath. The third duo of Nico Bonella and Dan Sossa also notched a 6-2, 6-0 de­ci­sion over Bethany Cop­pinger and Alexia Lescar­beau.

Paw­tucket climbed to 5-7 in league play. The Villa No­vans closed at 3-9.

REBELS OVER­COME MOUNT

WOONSOCKET — For the sec­ond time this sea­son, the Mount St. Charles ten­nis team re­ceived sin­gles wins from Matt Dubois, Ja­cob Lawrence and Tris­tan Cox against South Kingstown. But, for the sec­ond time this sea­son, the Rebels dom­i­nated all three dou­bles matches to claim a 4-3 Divi­sion I vic­tory Wed­nes­day af­ter­noon.

Dubois and Lawrence, who are get­ting ready to com­pete in the state tour­na­ment Fri­day at Slater Park, com­bined to drop five games in their wins. Cox, the Moun­ties’ No. 3 sin­gles player, earned a 6-4, 6-2 win.

Mount St. Charles (3-11 Divi­sion I) re­turns to the court to­day to fin­ish a match against Smith­field. The teams were through a set Tues­day when the match was stopped be­cause of light­ning.
