DaVeiga, Moison place at New Englands

DURHAM, N.H. — Central Falls junior sprinter Leonardo DaVeiga and Lincoln sophomore thrower Kyle Moison earned medals at the 73rd New England Interschol­astic Track & Field Championsh­ips Saturday at the University of New Hampshire.

Moison was outside the podium going into his last throw in the discus finals, but the Lion uncorked a throw of 156 feet, 7 inches to finish fifth. The throw also knocked senior teammate Garrett Doyle off the podium. The Ohio State-bound thrower finished seventh with a throw of 155-7, which he did on his first throw of the day.

Doyle posted another top-10 in the shot put, where his throw of 51-3.75 earned him 10th place. Teammate Evan Grivers was 17th with a throw of 49-8.25, while Moison’s best was 493.25.

DaVeiga, who was the 200-meter state champion last week at Brown, ended up finishing in a tie for sixth place with Hartford Public’s Leon Campbell with a time of 22.44 seconds. John Caouete of Oakmont (Mass.) won the event in a time of 21.95. North Smithfield senior Xavier Croteau was 23rd in 23 seconds. Croteau also finished 18th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.6 seconds.

The Blackstone Valley’s talented field athletes also produced solid performanc­es, as Woonsocket’s Johnathan Upshur finished in a tie for 11th place in the high jump with a clearance of 6-3.

Burrillvil­le sophomore state champion triple jumper Karlee Cournoyer did double duty in Durham. The Broncos finished 12th in the triple jump with a best jump of 35-11.25 and she was 24th in the long jump.

Central Falls thrower Dulcinea Burgo led three Blackstone Valley athletes in the javelin with a throw of 111-9 to finish in 12th place. Cumberland’s Victoria DeDonate (103-2) was 28th and Burrillvil­le’s Sam Prario (97-7) was 30th.
