Author to give talk on World War II hero at city veterans museum Feb. 23

WOONSOCKET – On Feb. 23 at 2 p.m., John Torrison, coauthor of “Miss Fortune’s Last Mission, will give a talk about Raymond Noury and the Czech memorials dedicated to his B-24 crew at the Veterans Memorial Museum at 78 Earle St, Woonsocket in the AFGS building.

Ray was born in Central Falls, son of the late Joseph and Marie-Jeanne Noury, and graduated from Sacred Heart High School. He joined the Army Air Corps, just after his 18th birthday in 1941, and served initially in sub-patrol on the eastern seaboard before joining a Liberator B-24 crew flying missions in North Africa, Greece, Italy and into Germany during WWII. After his B-24 crashed in Czechoslov­akia on Feb. 22, 1944, Ray, who was the crew’s sole survivor, spent 15 months as a POW. For his service Ray was awarded not only a Silver Star and Purple Heart but also the Air Force Distinguis­hed Flying Cross.

Returning home after the war, Ray was emplyed by Kayeem Meats Inc. and H.P. Hood Inc. and was the owner of the former Chapel Four Corners Market in Cumberland. He was a member of the Alphonse Yelle Post 9 in Manville and the Central Falls VFW.

The talk will be held in the AFGS conference room and the Veterans Memorial Museum, and the AFGS will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Copies of “Miss For- tune’s Last Mission” which chronicles Ray’s survival and the Czech memorials, will be available for a donation to the VMM.
