1958 Smithfield Avenue Congre

gational’s Alex Roberts and Bill Truesdale of St. George’s waged an old-fashioned shootout, but it was Dave Brown’s layup in the final minute that iced the victory for St. George’s in a YMCA Senior Church Basketball League 68-64 thriller between the top two quintets. Roberts posted his best total of the season with 30 points, while Truesdale fired in 27 in a close battle for scoring honors. In other action, Jim Colinan swished 21 points, but it was not enough as Pawtucket Congregational defeated Woodlawn Baptist 68-49 behind Rod Garbett’s 18 points and Dick Sargeson’s 17. 1968 Tom Asselin scored five of

Woonsocket’s eight points in double overtime as the Villa Novans edged Cumberland 59-55 to improve to 12-1 in the Class B Eastern Division standings. Woonsocket played with an iron-man five with Bob Farrow taking game-high honors with 22 points, Asselin finished with 16 and Charlie Smith added 10. Bob Passano, whose block of a layup attempt by Farrow with two seconds left in the first overtime preserved the tie, pumped in 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, Paul Sweetman hooped 15 and Tom Goryl netted 10 for the Clippers who dropped to fourth place with the loss. 1978 Brian Moreau notched a hat

trick and Brian Cordeiro added a goal to pace A. J. Hockey to a 4-0 whitewash over Landry & Martin in a Squirt Division Pawtucket Youth Hockey League contest. Bob Lebeau and Scott Cooper combined on the shutout. In other league play, Bob Krawetz netted two goals and Dave Connors, Fred Specht, Jim Backner and Dan Handrigan added one each to give first-place Luther Roofing a 6-2 romp over the Blarney Stone.
