Circus coming to McCoy in May
With apologies to the man on the flying trapeze, we’re talking airborne dirt bikes and the Nitro Circus ‘You Got This’ tour
PAWTUCKET — On Saturday, May 25, the circus will be coming to town. Nitro Circus, that is.
Nitro Circus is a global sports entertainment leader, and its new “You Got This” tour will be revving its way into McCoy Stadium this spring, where the ballpark’s infield dirt will be overtaken by dirt bikes.
“You Got This” is the evolutionary next step in action sports, with a promotional video online showcasing riders on dirt bikes, bicycles, and even scooters performing death-defying aerial tricks and stunts by launching off of ramps, high into the sky, and flipping through the air while crowds of adoring fans roar in the background.
The “You Got This” tour launched
last fall and has traveled to arenas across Canada, Minnesota, California, and Colorado. The crew now is ready to bring the adrenaline-charged tour to outdoor venues across the United States for the first time starting this spring, and among their four East Coast stops is McCoy Stadium on Saturday, May 25.
With no roof at the ballpark, unlike previous indoor venues, there are no limits, officials said. The huge stage set features the “Giganta” ramp, now with its biggest takeoff yet, that launches riders five stories into the air while the freestyle motocross, or FMX, riders will be flying 75 feet through the air from takeoff to landing.
The cast of top-tier riders and international athletes at the “You Got This” tour includes 19-time X Games medalist Nate Adams, 12-time X Games medalist Jarryd McNeil, and eight-time X Games medalist Mike Mason; multisport sensations such as Ryan “R-Willy” Williams, and BMX stars including X Games medalist Kurtis Downs. Additionally, accomplished female freestyle motocross athlete Vicki Golden will be making her first full tour debut with Nitro Circus.
“We are thrilled to be welcoming Nitro Circus to McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island during Memorial Day weekend,” Pawtucket Red Sox Director of McCoy Events Grace Eng said in an email on Monday. “We look forward to seeing many fans at the ballpark, from McCoy regulars to newcomers, for this energetic, unique event that showcases McCoy as a venue for all sources of entertainment.”
The arrival of Nitro Circus to McCoy Stadium this spring continues ongoing efforts to make the venerable ballpark more of a destination on nights when the PawSox aren’t playing. In years past, the stadium has played host to concerts and professional wrestling, to name a few non-baseball events.
The City Council’s Board of License Commissioners on Jan. 9 unanimously approved the entertainment petition from the PawSox to host the extreme sports competition at the ballpark on May 25, with a rain date slated for Monday, May 27.
Nitro Circus was co-founded in 2003 by iconic motorsports superstar Travis Pastrana. Since then, Nitro Circus has grown into a multi-platform phenomenon producing hit television programming, critically-acclaimed documentaries, and innovative digital offerings. That success ultimately gave rise to the Nitro Circus Live tour in 2010, according to a press release.
