f t d a CUMBERLAND — Mayor Jeffrey Mutter Friday announced the creation of a first of its kind formal internship program for high school juniors and seniors in Cumberland.

The Mayoral Internship Program is a competitive opportunity designed to tprovide students who have a passion for community engagement with the chance to gain meaningful work experience while making tangible contributions to the town.

The program will consist of two pathways for students, the first includes placement in the mayor’s office, and the second provides students with an interdest in engineering with the opportunity to be placed in the town Water Department.

“In order to make Cumberland a bet- ter place to live, work, and play we need to make sure there is a seat at the table for everyone and that each voice carries equal weight, including those of our students,” Mutter said “Too often local government has proven inaccessible to young people and we want to do our part to change that.”

All Cumberland students who will have completed their sophomore year by the summer of 2019 are eligible to apply. The program partners with the Cumberland School Department to allow students to use their hours for course credit. All applicants must be willing to commit 10 hours per week for the duration of the program.

Student interns will work closely with executive staff across town departments on an array of topics. For example, interns in the mayor’s office will work on projects including constituent services, social media tracking, community out- reach, and research. Students working in the Water Department will have the opportunity to work on mapping and shadow town employees as they complete field work, such as servicing water breaks.

Applications for internships will open on March 25 and close on May 1. The application materials will be posted to the town website and social media pages. Physical copies will be distributed during informational sessions hosted over the course of the application period.

Any questions regarding the internship or application process can be directed to Sarah King, administrative assistant to the mayor, who is coordinating the program. She can be reached at 401-728-2400, ext. 132 or sking@cumberlandri.org.
