What’s New in NumisMaster
As we advance towards the second quarter of 2024 in our constant efforts to expand and improve the NumisMaster website, our analysts find themselves pulling double duty. We are combining our database work with the Coin of the Year staff ’s process of honoring coins of exquisite design and construction. With our award ceremony shifts last year, we advanced the COTY process by over six months, leaving our current focus centered on the thousands of coins issued by Mints and Banks during the 2023 calendar year.
While most countries in the past month’s NumisMaster work offered the opportunity to add just a few up to a few dozen coin types or master records, two countries received the royal treatment, gaining roughly 350 coins each; Transnistria and Tristan da Cunha.
Transnistria declared independence in 1990, but only a handful of countries have recognized this independence and most of those are struggling to maintain their own freedom. Over the ensuing years, Transnistria has held its’ ground between Moldova and Ukraine, even through layers of economic hardships.
Tristan da Cunha is a remote volcanic island of less than 40 square miles, to which you can only travel by ship. Its archipelago also holds Gough Island, Nightingale Island, and Inaccessible Island, each of which has had fantasy coinage produced in their names. All of these British Overseas Territories, including St. Helena and Ascension, offer a myriad of wildlife which is displayed prominently on their coins, making them a blast for topical coin collectors. Contract mints work with the islands to produce these interesting coins, nearly 350 of which were added to the NumisMaster database last month.
In all there were a dozen countries to which a total of over 900 coins were added over the past 30 days, so check out the two mentioned above, as well as Hungary, Qatar, Israel, Slovenia, Poland, Slovakia, Thailand, and a handful of others as you explore the ever-expanding NumisMaster database.
As we mentioned in our last installment, if you have content improvements to share for descriptions, values, or images, feel free to contact us at the NumisMaster customer email address - n@ aimmedia.com. Comments on functionality can also be sent to this email. As we navigate through 2024, the plan is to improve both editorial and pricing content while we compile usage improvements to be addressed at the IT level. Together we will all be working towards fine-tuning the best numismatic database ever constructed.
