1920 Srl, the company operating the brand, filed for voluntary liquidation last October.

MILAN — Question marks hover over the Aquilano.Rimondi brand.

WWD has learned that the company behind the luxury women’s wear label founded in 2008 by Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi, called 1920 Srl, filed for voluntary liquidation on Oct. 9. This was confirmed by paperwork deposited at Milan’s Chamber of Commerce.

For the first time in years, the designers did not stage a runway show for the brand during Milan Fashion Week in February, nor did they present a collection to buyers.

According to market sources, the 12 employees of 1920 Srl were let go.

Reached by phone, Rimondi declined to provide any details. Market sources believe the company was hit by financial troubles.

Aquilano and Rimondi, who started working together for the Max Mara brand, unveiled their first Aquilano. Rimondi collection with a show in September 2008.

As of March 2017, when the brand inaugurated its first monobrand store at Shanghai’s Golden Eagle shopping center operated by IFFG, the brand was available at about 70 retailers in the world.

The two designers launched the Aquilano.Rimondi brand after exiting the 6267 label, which they established in 2005, and which was at the center of a legal battle with their former business partner, manufacturing company Castor.

Over the years, Aquilano and Rimondi held the title of creative directors for several Italian brands. From 2006 to 2008, they led luxury knitwear specialist Malo and, from 2008 for three years, they helmed the Gianfranco Ferré label, following that designer’s death. In May 2011, they were called by Andrea Della Valle to design the Fay brand, which they exited last July.
