Making An Entrance

-

Nanamica, a Tokyo-based brand that has partnered with The

North Face, Champion, Woolrich, Spike Jonze and Dr. Martens, has signed a deal to open a store in SoHo this fall.

During a visit to New York, founder and managing director Eiichiro Homma said he signed the lease for a 1,200-square-foot space at 125 Wooster Street. Although the brand has four stores in Japan, this will be its first in the U.S.

Homma, an avid sailor and skier, worked for Goldwin in

Japan for 18 years designing marine and outdoor apparel and founded Nanamica, which means One Ocean, All Lands, in 2003 with Takashi Imaki. The brand is centered around outerwear, using high-tech fabrics and modern silhouettes to create a collection of pieces blending fashion and function. Prices range from $600 to $1,200 for outerwear, $600 for a suit jacket and $360 for pants, shirts are in the $200 range and T-shirts are $80 to $140.

Homma, who is responsible for the buzzy North Face Purple Label collection, continues to work with that brand as well as

Dr. Martens. He said he’s also working with Reebok on a capsule that will include shoes and apparel such as tracksuits.

Nanamica has limited exposure in the U.S. and is carried in a handful of specialty stores such as 180 the Store, Extra Butter and Bodega Boston, Homma said. That was the primary incentive behind opening his own store.

“In the States, we’re not big enough to communicate the whole brand to the consumer,” he said.

Homma said he hopes to get the SoHo store open by November.
