Black And White

A strict palette made a strong impression. BY

While head-turning metallics were a strong trend on the Golden Globes 2024 red carpet, so was classic black and white.

The color duo is a perennial of style, particularly within French wardrobes ( just look to Karl Lagerfeld's personal looks, and Yves Saint Laurent's Le Smoking, which Ariana Greenblatt wore to the Globes). However, the recent rage for black and white goes back to the spring 2022 couture runways, as seen at Valentino, Jean Paul Gaultier and Viktor & Rolf.

For the Globes, Valentino's Pierpaolo Piccioli, Alexandre Vauthier and Schiaparelli‘s Daniel Roseberry embraced the strict palette of restraint with custom and archival looks seen on Carey Mulligan, Hari Nef and Meryl Streep.

Mulligan's Schiaparelli couture look was a reinterpretation of an original Elsa Schiaparelli couture gown from 1949 with a black ruched taffeta bodice with cream bustier embroidered with silver crystals.

“Barbie” actress Nef also leaned into the archives, donning an Alexandre Vauthier couture ruffled frock from fall 2018 with a corset by Mister Pearl.

“The ‘Barbie' costume department connected me to him; I'm such a fan of all his archival work for Thierry Mugler. They're the real deal,” Nef told WWD of the legendary corset maker.

Keri Russell shimmied in head-to-toe white Jil Sander, from her minimalistic fringe gown to her round zircon crystal necklace and Gogi Soft mini bag with feathers.

“I hardly ever go to the fashion shows, but I went to that one. Luke and Lucie Meier [creative directors of Jil Sander], who design for them are just rad. They feel authentic and cool. I love the vibe of what they were doing — it doesn't feel too fussy, which is what I really like,” she said of the brand's spring 2024 runway show, which Russell's custom cloud-colored superfine viscose, double-face sequin-embroidered dress was inspired by. Greta Lee also went all-white, in Loewe.

Rounding out the trend was black-andwhite dressing via separates, as seen on Gina Torres, who told WWD, “I'm a collector, so these are my own pieces:

Oscar de la Renta [a floral fishtail evening skirt], Cynthia Rowley [sheer black blouse] and my own jewelry.”

In addition, Celine Song wore a bespoke Loewe look consisting of a poplin buttondown, wool tailored jacket and skirt with oversize pin — a hallmark silhouette of Jonathan Anderson's Loewe spring 2024 women's collection, while Streep dazzled in a black sequin jacket, skirt and white bow blouse. She was awarded WWD's Icon Awards for her 2024 Golden Globes custom Valentino workwear as eveningwear look, channeling her character in “The Devil Wears Prada.”
