We've seen plenty of hard-as-nails 2D plat­form­ers in the last few years. Shovel Knight showed the world how to do pixel-art and retro plat­form­ing per­fectly on the Xbox One, and 0 fi And The Blind For­est showed us how clas­sic game­play can evolve for mod­ern gar­ners. Now Dead Cells, a Castl­e­va­nia-in­spired ac­tion-plat­former, is look­ing to do things a lit­tle dif­fer­ently. This Rogue like, Dark Souls-in­spired ti­tle sees you ex­plor­ing a non-lin­ear cas­tle in any di­rec­tion that you want. The twist? There are no check­points. You ap­pear, you kill, you die, and you try again. With ev­ery death you can un­lock a new level, or take a new path. Se­cret rooms and hid­den pas­sages open as you play, so there's al­ways plenty to ex­plore. You can also ex­pect tough com­bat that will re­quire dodges, blocks, and well-timed swipes [Dark Souls-in­spired, re­mem­ber?), and bosses that will fill the screen. Keep an eye on this one.
