While it’s been fashionable to knock EA since forever, one series which constantly evaded such fan fury was its college gridiron franchise. Largely because it was consistently brilliant, and the perfect complement to Madden: you could play a season in NCAA and then export graduates to EA’s NFL game, forming the next year’s draft class. Sublime.

Elements particular to the college game stood out. Play in a raucous away stadium and crowd noise caused receiver routes to become wiggly lines when viewed before the snap, while you’d lose many happy hours to recruiting new prospects in dynasty mode. Lawsuits over player likenesses soon saw EA and the NCAA part ways, and the loss of the series has been lamented ever since.
