Seldom do gamers have cause to sympathise with EA, but that was definitely the case when 2K signed an exclusive deal with Major League Baseball – instantaneously killing off EA’s pitch ’n’ catch sim. Fans were gutted. MVP enabled you to run a franchise as any MLB team and their three minor-league affiliates, for up to 120 seasons.

Its best feature was ‘hitter’s eye’. In real life, batters watch a pitcher’s hand to judge trajectory. MVP mimicked this by having each pitch type flash a different colour upon release. Green meant off-speed, orange a knuckleball, pink a sinker, and so on. It made for a clever fun/realism blend – as did the option to argue with umpires (and get ejected!) at any time.
