YEARS IN THE MAKING

MB&F offers these Machine Lights by German artist Frank Buchwald, who took a decade to design them.

More than 200 components gointoeach of these Machine Lights by Berlin-based artist Frank Buchwald. He was a science-fiction illustrator until 1993, when he began designing and making metallic furniture. His studio is in an old brick industrial building with antique electric switches and dark staircases, along with some visual reminders of World War II. Describing his Machine Lights, he says that they “live from a source other than the hand of man” and are “beings in their own nature.” ¶ The components include brass and burnished, blackened steel, as well as a handblown glass globe. The light filaments are visible, and they create a warm yellow glow.
