While magnetic compasses need to be regularly “swung,” satellite compasses need to be parallel to the vessel’s centerline. Because of this, satellite compasses usually come with alignment sights (plastic moldings and markings) that simplify installation. Users can typically make fine-tuning adjustments electronically. After that, most satellite compasses will not require further maintenance.
