THE TRANSFORMER

Pursuit builds the S 358 Sport for many types of adventures.

- by jim hendricks

Pursuit’s s 358 sport is the company’s first center-console in this size class. It’s a tender, an offshore fishing boat, an entertainment platform, a capable cruiser and more. ¶ One thing’s certain: It does not lack for amenities. There’s a row of three helm seats with fold-down armrests beneath the protection of an oversize hardtop and a tempered safety-glass wraparound windshield. Abaft the helm seats are a covered electric grill, refrigerator and sink, with foldout trays that convert to two aft-facing mezzanine seats. There’s also a fold-down transom bench in the cockpit. ¶ Forward is wraparound bow seating with swing-out backrests that create a pair of lounges. Raise the motorized table halfway and add a cushion for a sun pad, or elevate the table when it’s time to dine, with the forward console seat providing a place for guests to sit and socialize. ¶ A

pocket door on the helm deck slides open to reveal a wide companionway and a stepdown cabin with rich wood accents and tinted side windows. Port windows allow for fresh air. An enclosed head compartment has a vanity, sink, VacuFlush toilet and shower. A settee converts to a berth, and there’s a microwave— all conveniences for overnighting in a calm, secluded cove. ¶ The

S 358 can handle sport-fishing duties as well, with a 32-gallon transom livewell, 12 rod holders, a tackle center, and in-sole insulated fish boxes on the port and starboard sides, with diaphragm pump-outs. Eighteen-foot Taco outriggers are optional for anglers who like to troll for pelagics. A standard inward-opening, starboard-side door makes it easier to boat a big tuna or swordfish, and it doubles as a dive door (with a removable boarding ladder) or an easy way to step aboard from a mothership or marina floating dock. ¶ The S 358 is built rugged with handlaid fiberglass, and an infused fiberglass structural grid system adds rigidity. The hull and deck have a five-year structural warranty. ¶ Powered by a pair of 425 hp Yamaha 425 XTO V-8 outboards and carrying a crew of six with 260 gallons of fuel, the S 358 I got aboard achieved an average top speed of nearly 43.5 knots with a smooth ride. There was easy handling at speed, as well as in tight quarters, with the Helm Master joystick and forward bow thruster. ¶ Fast, flexible and multifunctional, the Pursuit S 358 can effectively shape-shift for the adventure at hand.
