A Legacy Lives On
Yacht designer Olin Stephens ii (top left) is pictured here with the crew of Dorade shortly after her launch. The 52-foot Marconi-rigged yawl, built at the Minneford Yacht Yard in City island, new York, was commissioned in 1929 and went on to win numerous high-profle ocean races. After she fell into disrepair, an italian owner restored her to her original form in 1997, and she continues to compete in races today. She is expected to compete in this summer’s Transatlantic race originating in newport, rhode island, the rolex Fastnet race and the royal Yacht Squadron’s bicentenary regatta and celebration in Cowes on the isle of Wight. Stephens was 100 when he died in 2008. he was responsible for numerous
well-known yachts during his long career. The frm he co-founded, Sparkman & Stephens, continues to design yachts.
