Refit at Lürssen
Refit is now a core business for Lürssen. Last year, eight yachts from 131 feet (40 meters) to 360 feet (110 meters) used the Lürssen facilities for modifications and maintenance. Lürssen’s five shipyards have space to build and refit several yachts at a time in covered sheds and docks. With 1,800 people working in the group, Lürssen also has the engineers, naval architects and craftsmen needed to realize any project, whether it be a refit or a conversion. Among the yachts the yard has refit recently are Phoenix² , Global, Radiant and Coral Ocean.
With Coral Ocean, the refit upgraded the yacht from private to commercial use. Many of the jobs completed will be unseen by guests, such as enhanced fire protection. HI-FOG sprinkler systems were installed in the galley, owner and guest areas. Fire protection was added to the engine-room deck. The emergency generator was moved from the engine room to the main deck, and the day head on the main deck was moved from the outside to the inside to make room for that generator. Throughout the yacht, the audiovisual and communications systems were updated. Also, the handrails were heightened. A dining table was installed on the upper deck along with windbreakers, and the sundeck was varnished along with having a sun awning installed.
In the grand scheme of things, this refit checklist is further testament to how Coral Ocean needed few changes and has stood the test of time. —J.B.
