Ross delivers strong start in Padres’ win
SAN DIEGO — Tyson Ross overcame control problems to combine on a two-hitter and Matt Kemp hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly, lifting the San Diego Padres to a 4-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.
Ross (5-7) allowed just two hits and struck out seven in six innings. But the right-hander tied his season high with five walks, including walking the bases loaded in the third that led to the Diamondbacks’ two runs.
Kemp’s fly in the sixth broke a 2-all tie. Cory Spangenberg scored just ahead of the throw by center fielder A.J. Pollock.
Ross combined with Brandon Maurer, Joaquin Benoit and Craig Kimbrel on the two-hitter. Kimbrel worked the ninth inning for his 19th save in 20 chances.
Kemp batted leadoff for the third straight game and had a double and picked up his 13th RBI in his last 19 games. Spangenberg had three singles, stole two bases and scored twice.
