Thanks to a Cinthya Samaniego goal with less than 15 minutes to play and several key saves by goalie Janet Reyes, the Arizona Western women’s soccer team escaped with a 1-0 victory over Chandler-Gilbert on Tuesday night at home. Samaniego, AWC’s leading goalscorer on the season with nine, broke the scoreless tie in the 76th minute, when she received a long cross from Daisy Rodriguez and blasted a shot that deflected off the goalie and into the back of the net.

That score held up thanks to the defense and Reyes, who finished with six saves (five in the second half).

With the result, AWC (9-3 ACCAC) and ChandlerGilbert (9-3) are now tied for second in the ACCAC standings, behind only Paradise Valley (12-0).

Jerry Egujie and Carlos Lopez scored twice each to lead the Matadors (9-0-2 ACCAC) to the shutout victory over the Coyotes (56-1).

Egujie’s opened the scoring less than 12 minutes into the match off a Juan Arango assist. Lopez added to the lead roughly 20 minutes later when Beto Garcia, who like Lopez is a freshman from Cibola, set him up for a goal.

The score remained 2-0 in favor of AWC until late in the second half, when Lopez (via Fabian Munoz) and Egujie (also via Munoz) scored two goals in a twominute span.

The Matadors, who host Mesa on Thursday, remain the only undefeated team in the ACCAC.
