The third quarter was back-and-forth, with Valley Vista tying it at 21-21 before Wolfe and Alvarado connected for a 32-yard score to put the Raiders back on top, and then the Monsoon once again pulling even before Romero scored from five yards out to make it 34-28. The ensuing extra point try was blocked, which proved costly.

Valley Vista scored early in the fourth quarter to take a 35-34 lead, and Cibola’s ensuing drive stalled at the Monsoon’s 23-yard line with about two minutes to play — which is when the Raiders, facing a fourth-and-one, attempted a 36-yard field goal that was missed.

Valley Vista scored on a long pass play shortly after that to effectivel­y seal things.

“There were just a few big plays that we gave up,” Arvizo said. “Aside from those big plays, our guys executed pretty well. It was one of those games that goes back and forth, and even though you wanted the victory, there’s a lot of positives.”
