Yuma Sun looking to expand coverage of student athletes

Fall sports are well underway in Yuma County. High school athletes are practicing every day, preparing for their next volleyball match, or the upcoming swim meet, cross country event or football game.

Our two sports writers work hard to cover sports and student athletes across our region, which includes eight high schools and a community college.

The goal is to give student athletes as much ink as possible. We’re your community newspaper, and high school sports are an essential part of our community. And for that to happen, we need the help of parents and coaches.

Coaches, please — send in the results from your team’s event. We will happily get them in the paper — and the more detail you can provide us, the better.

We sincerely want to hear from each and every one of you, win or lose. And parents, please take a few minutes and send us your photos from the games. If you can, include the final score of the game. We would love to print those photos in the paper, because we want to recognize our student athletes whenever possible.

Here are a few notes on how to best reach us.

First, our deadline each night for coaches and parents alike is 9 p.m. We have to send the paper to the press room by 11 p.m., and we need time to build and edit the pages. Time is of the essence, so please, send those scores in as soon as possible — don’t delay!

However, if you don’t meet that deadline, please, still send in your information. We’ll get it in the next edition.

Second, we have a variety of ways to send in information.

For photos, please email them to sports@ yumasun.com. Please make sure they are high resolution, and please include some information about what’s happening in the photos. We will run them as space is available, with the goal of getting in a variety of photos of our student athletes.

Parents can also call our sports department at 928-539-6882 — leave a message if we aren’t in, and let us know how the teams did.

And coaches, you’ve got the numbers for our sports reporters (and if you don’t, please let me know at 928-539-6862). Please continue to call or text them with the results of your games and meets. And please, let us know more than just the final score. Who was the star player for the night? Who had an exceptional game? What was the best moment of the game? We want to know that information, too.

The Yuma Sun team is incredibly proud of our student athletes — and we hope that together, we can share more of their accomplishments with our readers!
