Scottsdale man gets probation for false voter registration
PHOENIX — Authorities say a Scottsdale man has been sentenced to one year of unsupervised probation and 160 hours of community restitution for false voter registration.
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office says 38-year-old Alan Faygenblat electronically filed a fraudulent voter registration application with the county Recorder’s Office last September.
Faygenblat says he wanted to prove a point and show that the county’s voter registration process is flawed.
Prosecutors say Faygenblat falsely claimed he was currently a citizen of the United States and was born in New York.
By providing false information, prosecutors say Faygenblat was able to obtain a voter registration card and posted the details of his actions on social media.
They say an investigation confirmed Faygenblat was not a United States citizen, but rather a legal resident from Israel.
Man gets prison for making bomb threats in Tucson, Phoenix
TUCSON — A Mexican man has been sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for making bomb threats in Tucson and the Phoenix metro area last year.
Federal prosecutors say 43-year-old Octavio Acosta De La Torre of Nogales, Sonora was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Tucson. He previously pleaded guilty in the case.
Prosecutors say between last March 21 and April 1, De La Torre made 18 separate bomb threats to various businesses and government offices in Tucson and metropolitan Phoenix.
He allegedly called in threats to health centers, churches, schools, government buildings and military recruiting stations.
The hoaxes resulted in buildings being evacuated or classes being disrupted for several hours.
De La Torre later turned himself in to authorities at the Douglas Port of Entry.
