University idea has potential

Yuma could benefit from downtown concept, especially long term

-

Revitalizing an area or region is never an easy process. It takes hard work, research and time, along with a willingness to try something different.

In essence, it takes reinventing and evolving until a solution is found that works.

The City of Yuma isn’t new to the process. Twenty years ago, the banks of the Colorado River were choked with non-native species, overgrown and unfriendly.

Today, however, it’s a much different situation. Yuma and the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area rolled up their sleeves and cleaned it up. Now, we have a riverfront that is home to beautiful parks, clean beaches and safe bike and walking paths. It’s a space of which we can be proud.

Now the city is looking at the 52-acre site just south of Giss Parkway in the Old Town South.

Today, that space is a rough area. Dirt lots, weeds and chain-link fencing are not welcoming, and the space is under-utilized.

Imagine, however, the potential. It can be hard to see right now, but that region of Yuma could one day be a tremendous asset to the community, with the right vision and partnerships.

Currently, plans are in the works to develop the space into the University of Yuma. The idea is one that has potential, if done right. The university could work in partnership with Arizona Western College, supplementing and expanding the educational opportunities in our region.

And that in turn would help keep more of our high school graduates here for college, instead of leaving to pursue education options elsewhere. The end result? More Yumans with four-year degrees or higher, which in turn would help attract new business and industry to our community.

The narrow focus — further revitalizing downtown with a new university campus — has merit. But the bigger vision could potentially benefit Yuma for generations to come.

We’re curious, Yuma. What do you think of the University of Yuma campus vision? Let us know. Share your thoughts online at www.YumaSun.com, or send us a Letter to the Editor at letters@yumasun.com.
