• President Trump signed an executive order that reverses President Obama’s order to allow transgenders to use any public restroom or gym shower they want. It was a huge election issue. Imagine the mischief Bill Clinton could have gotten away with by identifying as the First Lady.

• O.J. Simpson is up for parole for his armed robbery sentence in July. Forty years ago the Good Housekeeping poll voted O.J. the most trusted man in America for three consecutive years. This poll more than anything else tells you how many Americans were on cocaine during the late Seventies.

• The Vatican began selling tickets to the pope’s Ash Wednesday service in Rome next week. It’s formal, however looser rituals are permitted. The Ash Wednesday services in West Hollywood are pretty much the same except the marijuana ashes they put on your forehead are laced with glitter.

When reading about our Fire Department and now our police department having to cut back on personnel and equipment (fire department) because of financial problems, let me add to other letters suggesting the need for Yuma to cut back on unnecessary expenditures and projects to better afford our firefighters and policemen and women and the necessary protection we get from those two departments.

It seems our Yuma City Council has been and is still making decisions with their heads buried in the sand and not facing facts about our economy and what should and what should not be good for the city and the people who live here and pay taxes that they use for funding the projects.

Are the fancy, very expensive structures that are costing big bucks for the intersections of 4th Avenue and 16th Street necessary or more important than insuring our fire and police don’t suffer from losing personnel and equipment? I don’t think so.

Let me add the new athletic complex being constructed — in a time of financial need, I would vote to keep the fire and police departments going first rate over another sports complex. Now, I read where another playground will be built at the PAAC. Another unnecessary expenditure with that money also needing to go to our fire and police departments needs first before anything. Where is the common sense?

As a resident of the City of Yuma and on a fixed income, I always need to spend carefully and stay within my budget, always considering necessities first before anything I might like to have. In case you might forget City Council, the needs of our fire department and police department should come first for consideration before other unnecessary spending takes place. Try it, you might like it! Another thing to consider. You will be up for re-election in the future and the citizens of Yuma have a good memory and we vote!

March 1st marks the beginning of Lent, the 40-day period preceding Easter, when many Christians abstain from animal foods in remembrance of Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the wilderness before launching his ministry. The call to refrain from eating animals is as old as the Bible. In Genesis 1:29, God commands humans to eat only plants; then Prophet Isaiah predicts that “none will hurt or destroy on God’s holy mountain.” A number of Christian leaders have followed the call, including Methodist founder John Wesley, Salvation Army founders William and Catherine Booth, Seventh-day Adventist Church founder Ellen G. White, and prominent evangelical leader Frank-

Some companies are trying real hard to make people to go to the paperless billing system.

Notice the current billing date the day you receive the bill. Often it is 7-14 days prior to the day your bill arrives. Look at the “payment due date” when you get the bill. At one time you got 2 weeks, now it runs 6 or 7 days, even though it takes over a week for you to get it.

So in summary, it takes 2 weeks for you to get the bill and a week to get them the payment.

No problem, I’ll take it to the local office. OOOHH, it has been closed, or is closing. So you call to make a credit card payment so you don’t get a late fee or a “DINK” on your credit rating. You may pay extra to pay by credit or they may not take cards. Don’t be surprised if you have to wait 45 minutes for the one agent on duty answers your call. Customer service??? It’s a thing of the past, like dinosaurs.

Check all your bills, you may be in for a surprise.
