Volunteers can help Nicholls transform neighborhood Saturday

A local Eagle Scout is asking for community members to whip out their garden gloves and shovels on Saturday to contribute to a community garden that was once the site of a gas station.

Eagle Scout Michael Nicholls said he has approximately 96 flowers, 26 desert bushes and 25 garden boxes to plant, and to complete the planting he will need aid from volunteers.

The planting will take place on March 11 from 8 a.m. to noon. at the garden located at 275 S. Orange Avenue.

According to the Century Heights Community Garden Facebook page, the area is being transformed into a community garden for the neighborhood and schools to enjoy. The club currently operates under the Arizona Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. rules and bylaws.

Nicholls suggested that those who are interested in attending on Saturday bring jeans, work gloves, a shovel, a battery powered drill or any gardening equipment that would be helpful. Closed toed shoes are required.

The 17-year-old local Eagle Scout, who is currently with Troop 8057 and attending Yuma Catholic High School, said he began his current project around November of last year when he approached the Century Heights Community Garden Club.

“I had a couple of choices for my Eagle Scout Project,” Nicholls said. “I thought this one would have a big impact on the community and that it would be more direct so everyone can see and everyone can partake in it. Also, I thought it would be a longterm fix for the garden club to help them open up to the public.”

“We really want to make a garden for the community and to just bring more of a nice sense of nature to the area,” Nicholls added. “We’d like to bring people together through the garden club and bring about that sense of community as well.”

He noted that he has also been receiving aid from various local sponsors.

“I have gotten wood from 84 Lumber, received generous donations by Dave Parish and Larry Sullins from GSA Landscaping,” Nicholls said. “My project would not be possible without all my sponsors and donors who helped me out along the way.”
