Wellton hosts World of Wheels Car Show Saturday

- BY JOHN VAUGHN BAJO EL SOL EDITOR

Midnight at the Oasis came and went last weekend, but that doesn’t mean owners of loving restored and cared for cars have to wait another year to show off their vehicles.

The town of Wellton will have its own exhibition on Saturday, the Wellton World of Wheels Car Show, beginning at 10 a.m. in Butterfield Park, 10231 Dome Street.

Anyone who wants to can exhibit a vehicle in the show, and a panel of judges will choose the best in the categories of Stock Vehicle prior to 1959, Stock Vehicle After 1959, Modified Vehicle before and after 1959, and Off Road and Unique.

The winner in a fifth category, Best of Show, will be chosen by vote of people attending the show.

A $30 registration fee will be charged for each vehicle exhibited in the show but there is no admission fee for spectators to attend the show, said Sandy Jones, Wellton’s deputy town clerk.

This is the third year of the car show that was started by Town Hall as a way to bring visitors to Wellton.

“The last two years we had 72 vehicles (exhibited) each year,” Jones says. “We’re aiming (on Saturday) for a little bit more, but if we meet (the same number) we’re good.”

The show is open to anyone who wants to display a vehicle, she said. “The more the merrier.”

It’s no coincidence the show is taking place on the heels of Midnight at the Oasis, the classic car show brought to Yuma by the Caballeros de Yuma. Organizers of the Wellton show hope at least some of the exhibitors at Midnight will still have their vehicles primped and will be up for displaying them a second week in a row, said Jones.

Car exhibitors can register for the show from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at Butterfield Park.

Winners in each of the awards categories each receive a trophy and a bucket full of car wash supplies.

The public will be able to purchase food and drinks from vendors at the car show.
