Yuma Rotary Club to host St. Patrick’s Day auction

- BY RACHEL TWOGUNS @RTWOGUNS

All are welcomed by the Yuma Rotary Club to purchase tickets and come dressed in their best St. Patrick’s Day attire for the organization’s annual dinner, dance and auction on Saturday to raise funds for Yuma youth activities and scholarships.

“We are encouraging people to dress the theme and really have fun with this event and help us raise money for local causes,” said Yuma Rotary Club president Melissa Short

The event is to take place from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Arizona Western College, 2020 S. Avenue 8E. Various tickets are available, from the $80 single tickets to $87.50 for a VIP half table.

Both a silent and a live auction will be held for the St. Patrick’s Day themed celebration.

“These are some of the best auction items we’ve ever had in the history of this event,” Short said. “A couple of items include a dunes excursion with a couple of drivers from Liberty Motorsports and a Wrigley Field rooftop experience for two.”

According to Short, Wrigley Field is home of the Chicago Cubs and the experience is a classic for baseball fans. Additionally, items to be auctioned off include trips to Orlando, Costa Rica and more.

“The biggest auction item is actually a pool that was donated by Conrad’s Pool,” Short said. “It’s a 14 by 24 foot in-ground pool.”

Some of the items for the silent auction are golf and wine packages. Along with the auctions, a full dinner will be served and there will be a costume contest as well as dancing. DJ Kurby is to provide the entertainment, Short said.

In total, the Yuma Rotary Club president said that the organization hopes to raise as much funds as possible to go toward area causes.

“We’ve been doing St. Patty’s for almost ten years,” Short noted. “We fundraise for ourselves and what we do with that money is we then distribute it into the community in the form of local projects, scholarships and an activity called RYLA.”

Short explained that RYLA (Rotary Youth Lead- ership Awards) is a camp for high school age kids and it takes place in California.

“It’s for them to go and learn about leadership,” Short said. “The experience helps kids sort of build relationships with their peers. It’s just a very valuable and wonderful experience. In the past we only sent two or three kids and this past year with funds from this event we were able to send 17 kids to this camp.”
