Cibola softball wins twice at tournament

The Cibola softball team won its first two games of the Apollo Invite in Glendale on Thursday to improve to 12-0 on the season (counting nonAIA games).

The Raiders beat Highland, 7-3, in their first game of the day. Madison Sierra was the winning pitcher, while Angela Oros went 3-for-3 and Amanda Ammons went 2-for-3.

They then blew out Thunderbir­d, 15-1. Kelly Katalbaswa­s was the winning pitcher, while Christina Robles (3for-3, 2 doubles), Nicole Villa (2-for-2, 2 doubles), Kamryn Moctezuma (2-for-3), Cielo Echols (2-for-3) and Oros (HR) led the way offensivel­y.

Cibola resumes the tournament at 9:30 a.m. today against host Apollo.

PREP GIRLS TENNIS Cibola 9, San Luis 0

The Raiders (3-1 AIA) did not drop a single set, and four of their six singles players — No. 3 Amulya Daniparthi, No. 4 Kelsey Berger, No. 5 Daisy Millan and No. 6 Victoria DeCorse — won 6-0, 6-0. No. 1 Abby Kern won her match 6-1, 6-0, and No. 2 Rebekah Bracy won hers 6-4, 6-0.

Gila Ridge 8, Kofa 1

Megan Cordery, Jessica Roth, Allison Taylor, Nina Hook and Fara Ganas won in straight sets for the Hawks. Kofa’s lone win on the day was in doubles, when Maesy and Kelsey Ramirez won.

JUCO SOFTBALL AWC wins 2 at Mesa

The Lady Matadors won, 4-2 and 6-2, in a doublehead­er at Mesa on Thursday.

Belinda Gonzalez and Hailey Cookson picked up wins for AWC.
