Libraries offer treasure trove of information

National Library Week celebrates one of community’s best resources

-

The public library is one of the best resources any community can offer to its residents and visitors.

At their most basic, libraries are repositories of books, literature, reference materials, magazines and newspapers.

But today, libraries offer so much more — especially here in Yuma County.

Libraries are veritable one-stop resources for information, available in just about every format one could imagine — paper, audio, DVDs, CDs, and more. They also offer access to the internet, and outreach programs to help people better understand computers, tablets and more.

They are also community centers, offering meeting spaces, educational activities and fun opportunities for all ages, including classes, workshops and events — even online tutors!

And the access doesn’t end once one walks out of the library, because our libraries offer a treasure trove of information and content online too, which readers can check out onto their tablets or computers.

The best resource offered by libraries, however, is the librarian. A librarian is the guardian of all that information and knowledge, and can guide visitors to precisely what they need, in a just a few moments.

And to unlock all this information, one only needs to have a library card, which is free.

This week, it’s National Library Week, “a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and library workers and to promote library use and support,” the American Library Association reports.

And Yuma is fortunate to have libraries across the county, ready to serve and help anyone who enters their doors.
