Kofa baseball tops Cibola 5-4 in 9 innings

It took nine innings, but Kofa wound up with a win in game one of its region series against Cibola.

After the Raiders (7-6 AIA, 1-3 6A Southern) scored a run in the top of the ninth to take a 4-3 lead, the Kings (8-4 AIA, 1-0 6A Southern) came back to score twice in the bottom of the frame for a 5-4 victory Monday at Kofa. In the bottom of the ninth, Eddie Carrera led off with a walk. Kevin Avila bunted and reached first. The next batter, Jeremy Santana, bunted down the third-base line and the throw to third was wild, allowing Carrera and Avila to score.

Jeremy Santana, who threw 3 1/3 innings of relief and allowed one run, was the winning pitcher. He also went 2-for-5 at the plate. Daniel Urbieta was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in.

PREP WRESTLING Steele wins 145-pound title

Nicholas Steele of San Pasqual won the 15-andunder Reno World Championsh­ip at 145 pounds on Sunday.

Steele won seven straight matches to claim the title in the 128-wrestler bracket.

Steele is fresh off a victory in the USA Wrestling California Middle School State Championsh­ip at 150 in March and an Arizona State Championsh­ip at 145 in January.

Katia Sandoval (3-for-4 with a two-run home run and three RBIs), Berenice Jaime (1-for-2, RBI), Ariam Agramont (2-for-2, two RBIs) and Rachellt Barraza (2-for-4, triple, two RBIs, winning pitcher) led the Sidewinder­s to victory on Monday against Holtville (Calif.).
