Grand Canyon: Found body likely missing teen boy
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK — The Grand Canyon National Park says that a body that was found on Friday is likely of a 14-year-old hiker who went missing nearly two weeks ago while in the bottom of the canyon during a family trip.
Jackson Standefer of Chattanooga, Tenn., was crossing a creek on April 15 when he and his stepgrandmother, LouAnn Merrell, lost their footing and were swept away.
Park rangers spent days searching with a helicopter, ground crew, drone and motorized inflatable boat. The search was scaled back last week.
The park says the body was found by a commercial river trip. It was transported by helicopter to the Coconino County Medical Examiner, which will confirm identification.
LouAnn Merrell, the wife of Merrell Boot Co. cofounder Randy Merrell, has not been found. Merrell is from Utah.
Mesa woman gets 14-year prison term in fatal crash
PHOENIX — A woman who pleaded guilty to running a red light and causing a car accident that killed two people in Mesa has been sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Maricopa County Superior Court officials say Ingrid Morataya also was sentenced Friday to four years of probation.
She pleaded guilty in January to two counts of negligent homicide and one count of aggravated assault.
Authorities say the 37-year-old Morataya was driving her SUV about 90 mph at the time of the June 2014 crash.
She was jailed on suspicion of manslaughter, aggravated DUI and other charges after she was discharged from a hospital for treatment of a broken vertebrae.
Court documents show Morataya has a history of driving under the influence and related convictions.
Man accused of disciplining 11-year-old son with stun gun
GOODYEAR — Goodyear police say they arrested a man on suspicion of child abuse after he allegedly used a stun gun to discipline his 11-year-old son.
Police say 49-year-old Darryl Ingram was arrested April 21 after the son told his school bus driver about the alleged abuse and school officials then reported it to police.
Police also said information on the case was provided to the state child-protection officials.
KNXV-TV reported that a police report says the boy told police his father used a stun gun on him when he didn’t do his homework.
A call to Ingram was answered by a person who hung up after saying Ingram didn’t want to comment about his case.
