3,000 students set to graduate Friday

Upward of 3,000 students will graduate from Yuma County high schools Friday evening.

Vista Alternativ­e High School will host its graduation ceremony at the Historic Yuma Theater on Main Street at 7 p.m. Wednesday (May 24).

Graduating seniors from Desert View Middle and High School will turn their tassels at 6 p.m. Thursday evening at the school’s campus at the corner of Avenue C and 16th Street.

More than 2,500 students will graduate from the Yuma Union High School District on Friday evening at their respective campuses. Ceremonies will begin at 8 p.m. and students who have met the Arizona and YUHSD requiremen­ts to receive their diplomas will walk the stage.

Graduation ceremonies are being recorded and will be posted on the school’s website the following week, the district said in a news release. This year’s class has earned over $29.1 million in grants and scholarshi­ps to support their higher education goals.

Graduates of the Class of 2017 at Yuma Catholic High School will cross the stage Friday night as well. YC’s graduation ceremonies will be proceeded by a Baccalaure­ate Mass at Immaculate Conception Parish at 4 p.m. According to YC’s calendar, the procession for the conferring of degrees will start at 6:30 p.m.

Students at Antelope Union High School will also graduate at 8 p.m. Friday evening. Seniors will be led onto Buckeye Field by graduates from the Class of 1967. The keynote speaker is Antelope alumnus J. Mintzmyer (‘08), a distinguis­hed graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy who earned a master’s degree in public policy at the University of Maryland, College Park, near Washington, D.C.

Seniors at Calvary Baptist School will have their ceremonies at 7 p.m. Friday at the school.

Harvest Preparator­y High School, a charter school with campuses in Yuma, San Luis and Goodyear, will have its graduation at 6 p.m. Friday at the Yuma campus, 350 E. 18th St.

Ceremonies for AZTEC High School will be 1 p.m. June 1 at the Yuma Main Library.
