Salvation Army club to offer summer camps

Parents spending their hours at work during the weekdays will have an option to enroll their children in the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club Summer Camp.

“Our summer program is a regular part of our Boy’s & Girl’s Program,” said Salvation Army Yuma County Coordinator Lt. Tim Brown. “Our camp program came about in an effort to meet the need to provide a safe place for the youth in the community over the long summer. Often many parents have to continue to work throughout the summer months, and so being able to offer a safe and affordable option for the children is a huge benefit to the families.”

Each week the Club opens at 7:30 a.m. and the camps are to take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club offers four sessions during the summer, with the first session beginning on June 5. Enrollment for the summer camps are open until full.

According to Brown, the Club is accepting 120 children this summer. Some of the programs included in the camp are STEAM (Science, Technology, Education, Art and Math) and Sports and Fitness.

A few STEAM activities consist of “Science of Superpowers,” “Space is the Place,” “Wacky Science” and more.

Sporting activities such as indoor soccer, yoga and group games are to be included in the Sports and Fitness Camps. Breakfast, lunch and a snack are to be provided each day as well.

The summer sessions are open to youth ages five to twelve and each activity is designed to be age-appropriate.

Cost for Club members is $130 for session 1, $130 for session 2, $125 for session 3 and $125 for session 4. Additionally, scholarships are available for children who qualify and may come from families with financial hardship.

The Salvation Army is also accepting teen volunteers between the ages 13 to 17 for the summer camps.

“Teen volunteers are so important,” Brown said. “These young volunteers bring about an energy that only a young person can. They are often looked up to by the young club members like a big brother or sister and are easy to relate to. In addition, by volunteering the teens gain valuable experience that will help them socially and academically.”
