AWC students win scholarships in student showcase
Nine Arizona Western College students took home scholarships from the college’s Student Showcase in early May.
The ninth annual event, which is put on by the general education curriculum committee, featured more than 75 students sharing projects ranging from scientific posters, modern language presentations, business models, informational websites, dramatic readings, and mechanical projects, including a six-foot tall trebuchet, said AWC English professor Ellen Riek in a news release.
This was the third year the students participating in the showcase were eligible to apply for $5,000 in showcase scholarships, generously provided by the Gowan Company, Riek said. Nine students earned showcase scholarships in five general education focus areas: Juan Guerrero, $1,000 — Quantitative Analysis; Tuan Nguyen, $1,000 — Digital Literacy; Sarah Shepard, $1,000 — Scientific Literacy; Melissa Reese, $500 — Digital Literacy; Nadia Rangel, $500 — Communication; Pamela Pircaro, $250 — Digital Literacy; Alicia Luna, $250 — Civic Discourse; Hector Rubio, $250 — Scientific Literacy; and Marissa Alvarez, $250 — Quantitative Analysis.
Several recipients will apply their scholarships to completing coursework at AWC, while others will use their scholarships to support their transfer to universities across the state, Riek said.
