FUTURE SILVER CARE EVENTS FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE INCLUDE:
• Coffee and Conversation: Ensuring adequate nutrition and hydration for seniors with Dr. Martha Alemayehu 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 23 Yuma Regional Medical Center Administrative Building 2400 S. Avenue A According to researchers at the American Geriatrics Society, dehydration is the most common fluid and electrolyte disorder in the elderly, with a prevalence of 20 to 40 percent. Studies show that the elderly population is at a higher risk for dehydration, related to a decreased sense of thirst, fear of being incontinent, difficulties swallowing and gastrointestinal disorders — just to name a few. Dehydration among the elderly is associated with a higher complication rate and should be regularly monitored by your primary care physician. Maintaining adequate hydration levels is essential to good health. The importance of hydration cannot be stressed enough, especially in warm areas such as Yuma.
Join Dr. Alemayehu as she explains the importance of adequate hydration and nutrition for seniors. Bring your questions and enjoy coffee, conversation and a light breakfast.
Dr. Martha Alemayehu is from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She earned her medical degree from the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in Glendale, Arizona. After her residency at YRMC, she plans to practice holistic medicine, with an emphasis on integrative and preventive medicine. Dr. Alemayehu enjoys reading, traveling and exercising.
