Phoenix pedestrian dies after crash caused by suspects’ car

PHOENIX — A 44-yearold woman is dead after being struck by a car in a chain-reaction collision triggered by five people fleeing from Phoenix police.

Authoritie­s say the incident began with a purse theft around 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

The victim directed police to a park where three women who allegedly took the purse met up with two men.

The five people drove away as officers approached. That led to an accident about a half-mile away when the suspects’ vehicle ran a red light and hit a SUV, which then struck the pedestrian who was standing in the median.

The woman died at a hospital. Her name hasn’t been released.

Police say the unidentifi­ed suspects are in custody and they include two girls ages 12 and 14.

Train derailment near state fairground­s closes McDowell Road

PHOENIX — The Arizona Corporatio­n Commission’s safety division is investigat­ing a train derailment near the state fairground­s in Phoenix.

Authoritie­s say a Burlington Northern Santa Fe boxcar nearly toppled over around 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Nobody was injured, but authoritie­s say McDowell Road between 19th Avenue and 21st Avenue will be closed until early Friday.

The derailment occurred at a railroad crossing and authoritie­s say a boxcar was left hanging off the rails at a near 45-degree angle.

Phoenix police say the cause of the derailment isn’t immediatel­y clear.

The corporatio­n commission’s railroad section inspectors are still at the scene investigat­ing the derailment.

Phoenix police probe shooting that kills man, wounds teen

PHOENIX — Police in Phoenix are investigat­ing a double shooting that left a 27-year-old man dead and a 15-year-old boy wounded.

They say the shooting occurred around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday near 91st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road around 11:15 p.m.

Both the man and teen were taken to Phoenix-area hospitals.

Police say the man was pronounced dead. He was identified Thursday as Guadalupe Tellez Salcido III.

They say the teenage boy sustained minor injuries. His name wasn’t released and police say he wasn’t cooperatin­g with officers investigat­ing the shooting.

Police say they didn’t immediatel­y have any suspects in the case.
