BP agent arrested in sex case involving minor
Accused is former Yuma resident, Cibola grad
A Tucson Sector Border Patrol agent has been arrested by the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office on an out-of-state warrant from Imperial County, Calif.
According to the Public Affairs Office of the Tucson Sector Border Patrol, Supervisory Agent Kyle Mrofka, who is assigned to the Ajo Station, was arrested on Sept. 29 on a charge of lewd and lascivious acts with a child.
Mrofka, 29, is a former Yuma resident and 2006 graduate of Cibola High School. He has nine years of service with the U.S. Border Patrol and is presently on a nonduty/non-pay status pending the outcome of the investigation into the allegation against him.
“The U.S. Border Patrol stresses honor and integrity in every aspect of its mission,” it released in a statement. “We do not tolerate misconduct on or off duty and will fully cooperate with all investigations of alleged unlawful conduct by our personnel.”
Taken into custody at approximately 6 p.m at the Ajo Station, Mrofka was transferred to the Pima County jail, where he is currently being held without bond while he awaits extradition to California.
Lt. Jimmy Duran, of the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office, said the warrant stems from an incident that happened four years ago at the Picacho State Recreation Area, which is roughly 24 miles north of Winterhaven.
Duran said deputies from ICSO were accompanied by Pima County Sheriff deputies to the Ajo Border Patrol Station when they questioned Mrofka about the incident, which involved a 14-year-old victim.
Saying the investigation was still ongoing, Duran was unable to provide any further information about the alleged incident.
He added he did not know whether Mrofka was waiving his extradition or fighting it, but once the process is complete he said he will be brought to El Centro.
