Colbert turning awkward photos into fundraising

#PuberMe campaign raising money for sober cause while having fun

- MARLENE ROWE

Everyone has an awkward photo from their teenage years. Oversized glasses, braces, fluffy glamour hair, dated clothing … somewhere in your scrapbook, you know these photos exist.

Now, someone is finally putting those photos to good use.

Late Show host Stephen Colbert and comedian Nick Kroll came up with a campaign to raise money for the hurricane victims in Puerto Rico.

For every celebrity photo posted on social media with the hashtags #PuberMe and #PuertoRicoRelief, Colbert will donate $1,000 to a hurricane relief fund.

“I’m happy to announce that for every celebrity — and I get to determine who’s a celebrity — who posts their awkward teenage photos with the hashtags #PuberMe and #PuertoRicoRelief, the AmeriCone Dream Foundation will donate $1,000 to One America Appeal,” Colbert announced on the show Sept. 27.

The funds come from his Ben & Jerry’s AmeriCone Dream ice cream flavor, the proceeds of which Colbert donates to charity every year. One America Appeal, the organization that will receive the Colbert funds, was established by former Presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter.

One America Appeal notes, “Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria have brought terrible devastation— but also brought out the best in humanity. As former Presidents, we wanted to come together to help our fellow citizens in Texas, Florida and the Caribbean as they recover and rebuild.”

Celebrities such as Tony Hale, Jack Black, William Shatner, Amy Sedaris, Weird Al Yankovic, Bradley Whitford, John Oliver, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, LinManuel Miranda, Conan O’Brien, Rachel Bloom and more have gotten in on it, sharing their teen or pre-teen photos, all for a good cause.

The three hurricanes that struck Texas, Florida and the Caribbean are no laughing matter. But Colbert has found a unique way to deliver a laugh while at the same time raising money to help meet tremendous need — and that’s a cause we can all get behind.

DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS OR NOT?

We were on our way home from grocery shopping at Fry’s along 4th avenue from 24th Street Saturday afternoon about 3 p.m. headed toward 32nd Street. I noticed in the center of 4th Avenue way down toward 32nd Street the beautiful massive size U.S. flag waving proudly with the wind blowing in the direction that totally covered the area straight ahead eight blocks away. At such a distance, it was almost breath-taking to see Old Glory displayed so perfectly! We wondered where the flag was positioned that it shown so beautifully. The road turned toward the Big Curve and we glanced to our right to see where the flag was coming from. It was from the Southgate Mall area.

So whoever takes credit for positioning the flag there, I want to say thank you for being so proud of our country to catch the eyes of so many passing by along the Big Curve. And Mother Nature cooperated so well in the perfect timing of the breeze. May God bless Yuma and the rest of our country, and as Americans, let us bless God!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
