Pen-pricks

• The Auto Club quoted car insurers who say that distracted driving is the number-one highway safety problem in California. What could cause that? Let’s just say the next tech billionaire is the guy who invents an app which sends a text message to Los Angeles drivers when the light turns green.

• President Trump was ripped by ESPN for picking a fight with pro athletes over the national anthem protests. Polls show two-thirds of Americans agreed with him. Last week, the Golden State Warriors joined Hillary Clinton among the number of people who won’t be going to the White House.

• The Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears shook hands with each other and hugged each other before they stood on the sidelines for the National Anthem Thursday night. It all worked out just fine. It shows Americans that bipartisan cooperation is achievable only through concussions.

October 15-21 is the 12th annual National Friends of Libraries Week, giving the staff of the Yuma County Library District the opportunity to publicly thank our Friends groups for all they do to make a difference for us every single day.

The Friends of Yuma County Libraries, Inc. supports the Main, Heritage, Somerton, San Luis, Roll, and Dateland libraries. The Friends of the Foothills Library provides support for our Foothills Library, and the Friends of the Wellton Library provides support for our Wellton Library.

The Friends groups are nonprofit organizations, composed of volunteers who contribute their time and expertise to support library services. They raise money that enables our libraries to move from good to amazing! Their efforts encourage the use of libraries, promote literacy, and they serve as vocal library advocates.

The work of the Friends highlights the fact that our libraries are the cornerstone of our communities. Libraries provide opportunities for everyone to engage in the joy of lifelong learning, and to connect with the thoughts and ideas of others from ages past to the present.

Outstanding among the many pleasures of living in Yuma are its parks. For me that is especially Smucker Park, a beautiful and always immaculately maintained oasis of grass, trees, ramadas, and a one-mile walking path. What seems to make Smucker Park unique is the caretaker, Randy Espinoza. Randy works with such enthusiasm, so obviously taking very happy satisfaction in his service to our community. His friendly greetings to the many morning walkers and runners add another nice start to their day. What a marvelous role model for all workers employed by the city of Yuma and Yuma County! We should celebrate them all.

I am always amazed and pleased by the fabulous photos by Randy Hoeft and Rachel Two guns. The photos this week by Hoeft of the mountain rescues were especially great, although it is in keeping with the regular talent seen in the Sun by these two.
