Gila Ridge allows 47 points, commits four turnovers in first half
5-2 overall, 1-1 region 0-6 overall. 0-2 region
The Yuma Catholic football team got back in the win column Friday with a 48-0 shellacking of ASU Prep. All 48 points were scored in the first half, and then the running clock took over while the backups got some playing time for the Shamrocks (5-2 AIA, 1-1 3A Metro).
“Our kids did what they were supposed to do, and they went out and took care of business,” Yuma Catholic coach Aaron Cheatwood said over the phone. “It was a tough game for them to play because the expectation was so high.”
YC beat ASU Prep, 77-0, last year, and the score was 64-0 at halftime after the Sun Devils’ coach asked, and was granted, to not allow the running clock.
The first three touchdowns Friday, all in the first quarter, were of the passing variety from sophomore quarterback Gage Reese, who went 9-for-15 with 310 yards and five touchdowns.
The first was a 17-yard pass to Jason Pisano at the 6:50 mark in the quarter, then fewer than 20 seconds later, Ean Chavez scored on a 20-yard pass. Harrison Long had a 61-yard receiving touchdown nine minutes into the game.
In the second quarter, Chavez and Audie Ethington scored on rushing touchdowns of 19 and 67 yards, respectively. Chavez rushed for 77 yards on 66 carries.
The final two scores of the half and the game were passes from Reese, an 84-yarder to Parley Kirkham and a 1-yarder to Yohan Stokes.
Stokes led all receivers with four receptions for 139 yards, while Kirkham had two catches for 93.
