AWC men’s basketball gets another close win in Texas

Fresh off a two-point win over No. 3 South Plains, the No. 22 Arizona Western men’s basketball team picked up another close victory Saturday in Levelland, Tex., beating Howard, 63-62.

Brandon McGhee (14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) and Andre Allen (14 points, 7 rebounds) were the leading scorers for the Matadors (3-0 overall), while Alfonso Plummer chipped in 13 points.

AWC returns to the court Tuesday at home against Grand Canyon Club.

Lady Mats lose to Midland

The Arizona Western women’s basketball team lost, 64-55, to No. 21 Midland in Odessa, Tex., on Saturday.

Theyoung Puoy had 14 points and five rebounds for the Matadors (2-2 overall), while Raven Roberts added 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Bisping to fight Gastelum

Yuma native and UFC fighter Kelvin Gastelum will face Michael Bisping in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Nov. 25 in Shanghai, it was announced Saturday.

Anderson Silva, Gastelum’s originally scheduled opponent for the event, was removed from the card earlier this week because of a potential doping violation.

Bisping (30-3) will be fighting on a three-week turnaround, as he’s just one week removed from losing his UFC middleweight title to Georges St-Pierre.

Gastelum (13-3) last fought July 22, when he lost to Chris Weidman.
