Man arrested in assault on Yuma police officer
Yuma police arrested a 27-yearold man Wednesday morning on suspicion of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
The incident happened at approximately 11:16 a.m. in the 400 block of South 1st Street.
According to Yuma police, about 45 minutes earlier, a civilian traffic investigator stopped to assist a vehicle that was stopped in the middle of the roadway at that location.
While this was happening, the passenger of the vehicle, now identified as Edward Ornelas Jr. started to get aggressive with the civilian traffic investigator, police said.
The Investigator called for a sworn officer to assist, and when the first officer arrived Ornelas Jr. allegedly started fighting with that officer.
Several more officers arrived on scene and Ornelas Jr. was taken into custody and booked into Yuma County Detention Center.
Two Yuma Police Officers were injured during the incident and taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where they were treated and released.
According to Yuma County jail records Ornelas Jr. was booked into custody on one misdemeanor charge of failure to appear and one felony count of aggravated assault upon a police officer.
Ornelas Jr. is being held on a $1,500 cash-only bond.
