Police ID man fatally shot at area bar

Yuma police have released the name of the 37-year-old man who was shot and killed inside the Maverick Bar early Sunday morning.

The man has been identified as Joseph Benjamin Roosevelt. He and the man who allegedly shot him, 38-year-old Carlos Moreno Leal Jr., were thought to have known each other.

Officers responded to the bar, located at 1460 S. 4th Ave., at approximat­ely 12:39 a.m. in reference to an aggravated assault.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a man with a gunshot wound. The man was transporte­d to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Leal was later located in the 1300 block of South 5th Avenue and taken into custody without incident.

He was booked into the Yuma County jail on multiple felony charges including first-degree murder.

Other charges are aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon by a prohibited possessor and disorderly conduct with a weapon.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Yuma Justice Court at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. He is currently being held on $1 million cash-only bond.
