Arizona Western men, women beat Tohono O’odham

The Arizona Western men and women’s basketball teams both picked up lopsided victories over Tohono O’odham on Wednesday at home.

The Matador men won 120-75 to improve to 16-8 overall (11-5 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference), while the Lady Matadors won 79-45 to snap a two-game losing streak — and also improve to 16-8 overall (11-5 conference).

In the men’s game, AWC went over 100 points for the eighth time this season; the Matadors’ 120 points were the third-most they’ve scored this season, and their 45-point margin of victory was their secondlarg­est.

The Matadors did it with an extraordin­arily efficient effort from the field, going 50 of 79 (63.3 percent) from the floor and 15 of 29 (51.7 percent) from 3-point land.

Andre Allen led the Matadors in scoring with 27 points on 12 of 19 shooting, followed by Alfonso Plummer with 26 points on 9 of 11 shooting (8 of 10 from deep). Dajuan Beard (19 points), Daryl Adams (14) and Marvin Mapaga (11) also finished in double figures.

Mapaga led the team in rebounding with seven and in blocks with four, while Beard had a team-high (and season-high) 13 assists.

In the women’s game, Theyoung Puoy led the Matadors with 18 points while Destiny Gonzalez (16 points) and Josselyn Morris (11) were also in double figures.

AWC’s men and women return to action Saturday at Phoenix College.
