District One board to meet today, sets sights on new school

Tonight’s board meeting of Yuma Elementary District One will focus on a new school that is in the district’s future.

The governing body of Yuma’s largest elementary district will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the board’s meeting room located at 450 W. 6th St.

The new pre-K through fifth-grade school, to be named Dorothy Hall Elementary, will be located at 44th Street and Avenue 6E, adjacent to the Kuechel Ranch subdivisio­n, according to District One’s request for qualificat­ions listed on the Government Bid Finder and Notificati­on System. The school would be about 50,000 square feet.

At Monday’s meeting, the board may consider approving architectu­ral and engineerin­g services for the new elementary. The board may also consider approving a contract with Thompson Design Architects, consider a motion to use the constructi­on manager at risk model, and consider awarding a request for qualificat­ions for level two projects.

The board also intends to approve a new principal for Castle Dome Middle and assistant principals for Castle Dome, Gila Vista and Fourth Avenue.

Board members will hear several updates on informatio­nal items, including technology, transporta­tion, enrollment, and the district’s financial trends. A policy on the authorizat­ion of expense reimbursem­ent will have a first reading. The board will also hear a presentati­on about the “Right at School” enrichment program.

The school showcase will be presented by Mary A. Otondo Elementary students, and the board will also recognize its top-five employees for the month.

Under its consent agenda, the board may approve payroll vouchers in the amount of $5,221,445.14 and expense vouchers for $3,514,941.19. The consent agenda also includes travel requests; minutes for approval; personnel reports and actions; student field trips, activities and extracurri­cular tax credits; the acceptance of donations, solicitati­ons and grants; activity calendars; the dispositio­n of surplus property; an updated IGA with Arizona Western College for a joint inclusion preschool; renewal of existing procuremen­t contracts; and the awarding of e-rate fiber and network equipment.

Any school board reserves the right to call for an executive session for legal advice concerning any items on the agenda.
